The IT Governance Mandate

Gartner Research defines IT Governance (ITG) as the processes which ensure the effective and efficient use of IT in enabling an organization to achieve its long-term goals. As part of a corporation's larger Corporate Governance initiative, ITG drives pursue not just near-term IT objectives but future business goals, and operate under the same regulatory compliance mandates as the business itself.

ITG initiatives make demands on IT management and operations to measure both the effectiveness and efficiency of their performance to prove IT's business value to executive management. Business stakeholders and customer groups prioritize their demands of the IT organization with investment decisions base on expectations of verifiable return. While ITG is composed of processes with similar attributes inherent in all process definition - inputs, outputs, roles and responsibility - it does not necessarily define how these processes will be implemented or proceduralized.
